Have some code

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

I’m writing a fair amount of code nowadays, both at work and at home. It’s my plan to release bits I think are useful so others can use them as they see fit. I’m sticking all of this in /code, so browse over and take a look.

Firstly, I’ve written an RSS Feed generator in PHP which allows you to produce RSS feeds effortlessly.

Secondly, I’ve written a small class for managing file downloads in php. This allows you to track how many people are downloading certain files on your site.

More are on the way, as is a new site design.

Any code I stick on here can be freely used in any commercial / non-commercial projects unless otherwise specified. If you do end up using anything I’ve written then letting me know is a nice way of expressing your thanks. :)

Yardsnap BETA now online

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

…and has been for the past three weeks. We’re still ironing out bugs at the moment and there’s so much more we’re going to roll out over the next few months, but as it stands it’s a damn good free property listings site.

Signups from landlords and students have been promising. At one point we had 35 properties listed for Canterbury but that’s trailing off as houses are getting let. Student / Tenant signups are strong and hopefully this trend will continue - we’ve only been online for three weeks. ;)

I’m working on this quite hard at the moment and lots of exciting new management features for landlords are on the way. Watch this space ’cause it’s changing rapidly!

Code Spaces is very cool

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

I’m a fan of using Subversion to manage projects. To some extent I’m also a fan of using Trac to view the repo / bugs / timeline. However, I find setting this up manually to be a time consuming pain in the ass, so today I set out on a hunt to find some subversion hosting. I wasn’t looking for long as I quickly came across Code Spaces.

Setting up a repo is done with a few clicks. Assigning users to a repo is done with a few clicks. Everything is done with a few clicks. The onlineĀ  interface is simple, easy to use and responsive and there’s a free trial, rock on!

If your looking for easy svn / project management, go with these guys ’cause their product is hot.

A quick look at KDE 4.0

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Last night I realised that KDE 4.0 was out so I thought I’d give it a shot. As with everything on Ubuntu installation was a few clicks and I was up and running within a minute or two. Visually I think it looks great and I like the new start menu. I didn’t achieve all of the eye candy that other screenshots have demonstrated - I think they rely on Compiz and as I’ve got a crappy ATI card turning that on means that apps like Google Earth stop working.

Despite it’s prettiness this version is still in its infancy and barely usable, even options like adding/resizing the taskbar aren’t available yet. Version 4.1 comes out in June / July and promises some pretty big updates that will make switching worth while. Things are really improving in the world of desktop Linux which is great to see!

Happy New Year etc.

Bring on 2008… I have a good feeling about this one!
