Developing Java Web Services

Friday, September 21st, 2007

For the past week I’ve been in London (Accenture Learning, Lime Street) on a training course for work, entitled “Developing Java Web Services” and it’s been very interesting. The only problem is the sheer amount of material it covers, which is hard to keep enthusiastic about after 5 days of the guy at the front of the room (literally) throwing knowledge your way.

If any one gets the chance to attend this course I really recommend it as it’ll make you an expert in XML/REST/SOAP/WDSL/SAAJ/UDDI/JAX-RPC/JAX-WS and any other acronym you can think of in no time at all. :P

More Sunny Weekend Stuff

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

I’ve no idea what’s going on with the weather this year - it’s mid September and still hot. I’m not complaining mind you as this weekend Laura and I made the most of it and headed down to Fleet Pond.

I never knew I had a beautiful nature reserve right on my doorstep. If you live in the Fleet / Hampshire area then check it out because it’s worth seeing.

(Watch out for the man eating trees though ;))

Life updates and such

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Well as is the case in “real life” I’ve been doing the 9-5 now for the past month and there is little time for much else. Friday night bought some release as a rather large group of Sun employees headed out to the local rock club for a night of fun filled antics. There was beer. It was messy.

I’ve just signed up for linkedIn because apparently it’s going to be the next big thing to waste your time with, so you can view my public profile here. I was surprised at how many people I know of use it, not necessarily in my age range, but it has large following of 30-somethings all looking for career advancement no doubt. I figure if I start now and get my name into certain circles I’ll stand a better chance of getting a (good) job when graduation day finally arrives. Or maybe I won’t, but it’s worth a shot. That’s probably why I signed up: I’m curious at how effective it is.

I spent the whole weekend after Friday recovering and tinkering with this and that but I wasn’t good for much else. I tried to get bluetooth working on my laptop but I can’t detect any devices and no devices can see me, which is a little strange because I’m sure I followed the gentoo-wiki to the letter.

After listening in on some interesting lunchtime conversation I think my project for this evening is going to be to try and setup bonded ethernet adaptors. The idea of falling back onto wireless automatically when I want to go walkies with my laptop is too cool.

All is moving along nicely. I’ve finished my first month of work, only 11 more to go.
